Count Your Many Blessings, Name Them One By One...

I am grateful for cell phones.

I am grateful for 911 dispatch.

I am grateful for a neighbor who dropped everything to give me a ride.

Most of all, I am so very grateful that both of my kids were safe
after this happened while my poor daughter was out driving with my son:

Material things just don't matter at all.

Family is what matters. ♥

The Weekly Grind...

I seem to have  a LOT more time lately since I was released from working with the 12-18 year old girls at church.  It means I have been getting a lot of long over due projects completed... For example, this week I made copies of some videos we had taken on DVD for people who were waiting for them, I put a DVD together that my mum has been waiting for, I was able to re-design a friends blog for her, I have scrapbooked both layouts and cards, I cleaned out the pantry, I worked with the fam to plant marigolds and bushes in our front yard, I have been working on improving a composition of a choir version of "High On A Mountain Top" that I have written, plus I cooked FIVE meals this week, (that's a lot for me!)  I have also been trying hard to stay on top of the dishes and the laundry since hubby has been working his butt off with a couple of guys to get our basement finished.

I honestly do not remember the last time I got so many EXTRA things done in a week.  (Remember, I also work full time for a computer software company, 6am-2pm daily, so I am nowhere near the Super-Mom many of you ladies are!)  However, this week I have felt better.  I have just kept a running list of things I wanted to do, (I call it "The Weekly Grind"), and crossed them off as I went a long.  (Don't worry... there was plenty of time to have fun with the hubby & kids on top of the work.)

Here is my Weekly Grind list for this week so far!
  • Go through the big box of paper I collected from around the house and sort/file/trash it!
  • Clean out the refrigerators & freezers
  • Spring clean me & hubby's bathroom
  • Cook nice meals for my fam each day (except Friday... that's date night!)
  • Launder our bedding
  • Get my visiting teaching done
  • Meet with the ladies who are singing for the next Relief Society Meeting
Of course there are other things to do... you know, normal stuff... dishes, laundry, vacuuming, etc... but this is the EXTRA stuff I want to do.  What about you?  What do you want to accomplish?  What's on your Weekly Grind List for this week?

Letters Of Intent...

Foursons

Dear Waiter At Olive Garden,

Wow, I have never in my entire life had a worse waiter than you!  (And that is saying something.)  You were seriously lucky I have a conscience and feel I should tip everyone.  You were also lucky they didn't ask me how everything was when I left.  I would have told them!

Sincerely
Cold Food Hater

Dear Green/Grey Lexus Driver, license plate 126PAD,

You obviously are not a multi-tasker so please, GET OFF YOUR FREAKIN' PHONE BEFORE YOU GET IN TO YOUR CAR TO DRIVE!!! You swerved over in to my lane and almost smashed in to me because you were yapping on your phone when you decided you needed to turn right at the last minute although you were in the LEFT lane.

Sincerely,
Took Everything In Me Not To Give You The Bird

Dear Carbs:

I love you :(

Sincerely,
Addicted To Yummy

Word Of The Week...

The American/English word of the week is:

 JOINT

A true dialogue between my mum, (in her proper English accent of course), and the grocery store employee during one of our first trips to an American grocery store:

Mum:  Oh hello, can you tell me where I can buy a joint please?

Grocery Store Employee:  (Insert chirping crickets here.)

An American Joint...

An English Joint...

Letters Of Intent...

Foursons

Dear Utah Weather:

I really need to plant the flowers and bushes I bought a month ago.  Please could we be done with the cold?  It is May 14th for heavens sake!

Sincerely,
Missing Spring

Dear Neighborhood Big Dog Owners:

Could you please be polite enough to clean your freakin' BIG piles of poop off my lawn when your dog is done.  My dog is tiny.  She cannot poop out logs that are as big as her.  I swear if I find out who you are I am gonna collect it and leave it in a pile in front of your door for you to step in.

Sincerely,
Sick Of The Crap

Dear Walmart Employees:

Please don't wear a shirt that says "How Can I Help You?"  It is just not right.

Sincerely,
Never Been Helped

Raising Grass???

I have been stressing out about my grass a little. It just isn't as perfect as it used to be, probably thanks to this cute little gal...

She likes to dig... under the trampoline mostly. (We have a pretty big hole there now.) :(  The grass is also a bit patchier than it used to be.  We fertilized it and it looks a lot better... we bought some patch stuff to take care of the holes and we decided recently that we would just seed it again to make it thicker, but I am still not quite happy with it.

Yesterday I was reading a story in LDS Living magazine while waiting at the dentist and wouldn't you know, a mom was stressing about HER grass too because her two boys were playing outside pretty roughly and it was getting all torn up.  You know what her wise husband said to her?  "Honey, we aren't raising grass, we're raising children!"

I had a good giggle about that as I thought about my stress over our grass recently.  I also thought about all the other things that I over-stress about.  The piles of dishes in the kitchen, the trash that looks like it is about to overflow, the book bags that get left strewn all over the floor... the laundry that sits in the dryer for 2 days after they dried it... hey, the list is endless.  However, I did think yesterday that I need to remember I am raising children, and my home doesn't have to look completely PERFECT all of the time.  The family need not get too excited... this does not mean by any length of a shot that they can just be slobs, but I WILL try to be a little less rigid about it. :)  What about you?  Are you raising grass or children???

Mother's Day Fun...

I hope you all had a FABULOUS Mother's Day.  I was a little sad because my Mum was in England and therefore I didn't get to see her, but we did get to have a big family dinner with her before she & Pops left for their holiday.

I'm really, really sorry...  Sorry that I have the best mum in the whole wide world and you don't! :P

There is not much my mum can't do.  She is a fabulous cook (puts on the most magnificent spread no matter who is coming to dinner.)  She is an incredible seamstress (made all my homecoming/prom dresses and even my wedding dress!  She recently MADE all the curtains for her new house because she couldn't find any she liked!)  She is an amazing artist (have you been to her house?  She painted most of the paintings you see hanging around.)  She is a spiritual giant (I love how we can be chatting on the phone and she will tell me a scripture that she read that day and what she learned from it.)  She is THE best choir director ever (no offense to all the other choir directors out there, but she just is, and I have accompanied A LOT!)  I only wish I could be a mother like my mum.  She runs a home that you feel totally peaceful, comfortable and loved in, but still knows how to have fun!

LOVE YOU MUM!!!!  Don't kill me, it's a WAY cute pic. :)

Well my family went out of their way to make Mother's Day extra special for me.  I can honestly say I didn't have to lift a finger!  He made BLT's for breakfast, grilled T-bones for dinner and waited on me hand and foot.  He even surprised me by making reservations at The Roof for dinner on Saturday to celebrate.  If you have never been there, you have to go for a special occasion sometime.  It is one of the best meals ever!!!  We got there early because we were afraid we wouldn't find any parking because of the Jazz game, so we got to walk around Temple Square for a while.  I had no idea that Temple Square was soooooooooo beautiful in the Spring... they have thousands of Tulips and other flowers... It was breathtaking!  Well we had an hour before our reservations, so we got kind of silly with the pics.  We took some self portraits...

Then he let me take some "GQ" pics of him for us to laugh at... ha ha... he even smelled the flowers for me!

Finally, we went up to the restaurant for the most delicious meal.  The Roof Restaurant is on top of the Joseph Smith Building, (10th floor), and has a magnificent view of the Temple and the Capital It is very romantic and fancy.  They put on a completely gourmet spread with Prime Rib, Baked Ham, Chicken Cordon Blue in Cream Sauce, Pork with Cranberry Roulade, Beef Medallions, Fish (which I can't be specific about because I really don't eat it), Chef's choice of potatoes, shrimp, salmon, hors d'oeuvres, soups, salads, steamed veggies and a dessert bar you would not believe. I had tastes of just about everything savory (non-seafood).

There is one dessert that I absolutely adore there though, and that is the Crème Brulee.

This my friends is divinely sumptuous!

Now the most amusing part of evening was my hubby with the dessert bar.  We calculated by the end of the evening that he had downed AT LEAST 13 desserts...

off to get more...

I was seriously getting sick just watching him!  (BTW, I think it is totally unfair that he can eat that much and not be fat!)

Thank you to him and the kids for making the whole Mother's Day weekend so special for me. :)  I love you guys. :)

And The Winner Is...

So I put everyone's name in a hat... (TWICE if you were a follower too), and the name I pulled was.... (drum roll here) brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

ANGIE!!!! :)

Congratulations, I will get you your Crunchie Bar... (which is lucky to still be in my house btw.)  Dee was completely disgusted with me.  She said "WHAT?  Why would you give away a CRUNCHIE??"  I told her I think my readers deserve to know what they are missing.  She just rolled her eyes at me in a 16 year old kind of way.  Mike Sr was just glad I wasn't giving away HIS favorite.

I actually LOVE doing little give-away's, so don't be sad if you didn't win... just stay tuned to see what English Treat I will give away next! :)  (Maybe it will be Hubby's fav...  Mwahahahaha!)

A Night To Remember...

A couple of weeks ago my work took a bunch of us to Rodizio Grill and a Utah Jazz Game (the last one of the regular season), for one of those "bonding with the office folk" activities.  My hubby decided to drop me off at work that night so I could catch a ride with Jenna and not have to drive downtown by myself.  Jenna and my boss were pretty much the last ones to leave the office, and it turns out that because some people backed out at the last moment, there were a couple of extra tickets, so my boss asks hubby if he wants to tag along.  Hubby is still in his work clothes so he decides to run home and change and then meet us there.

Little did I know that hubby had eaten TWO fiber one bars on the way home from work, not knowing that he would be going anywhere or doing anything this particular evening.  About one quarter of the way in to the game, the fiber one bars kick in FULL GEAR!!!!  Bear in mind that we are sitting with at least 30 people from my work now.  All of a sudden there are pretty foul smells circulating through this tightly seated group.  Phrases such as "who the hell did that?" and "who the freak crapped his pants?" are being tossed around like a volleyball at the beach.  My hubby finds it completely funny and gets to laughing so hard that obviously they figure out he is the culprit.  I am completely embarrassed...

The next day, it is the only thing anyone is talking about at work and I am put through complete hell for the entire 8 hours I am there... If people aren't laughing, talking or asking about it, they are making fart sounds as I go by thinking the whole thing is hillariously funny.  People who weren't even there know about it.  I spend the entire day trying to explain that he had eaten fiber one bars and couldn't help himself, while profusely apologizing for HIS behavior.  Some of the employees had to be paid off with chocolate.

So my point is this... would hubby have behaved like this in front of his own co-workers?  I would say no.  Would he have let them go in front of all the women where he works?  Ummm... no again.  So why would he think it is ok to do this with the people I work with???

I can tell you this... He is NEVER coming to anything work related again... I don't think I will even let him come up in to the office to visit again.  My husband is BANNED!

Sweetie, it is a good job I love you... and that is all I have to say on this matter!! :)

English Chocolate... Wanna Try???

WHAT?  You have never tasted REAL English chocolate before?  Well today just might be your lucky day!!!

One of my absolute favorite candy bars from England is the Crunchie.  (Hubs & the kids love it too.)  We always request some of these be brought back when any one in the family comes or goes to England.

THIS is a Crunchie...

It is an absolutely melt in your mouth sweet and sugary honeycomb center, dipped in creamy Cadbury milk chocolate.  Mmmmmmmm.  And guess what, I have not one, but TWO of these delicious chocolate bars... one for me of course... and one for a lucky reader!

Who wants to try this English delicacy?  I'm willing to ship it anywhere in the US!  Just leave me a comment and I will pick someone randomly on Tuesday May 11th.  (One entry per person this way.)  Want another entry?  (This is good stuff... imported you know!)  Just click on the follow button to the right there and leave a comment letting me know you are a follower!

I'm looking forward to meeting some new bloggy friends, so don't be shy! And don't feel bad if you don't win this week, I am pretty sure I will be giving away some other goodies in the coming weeks, so come back and visit me! :)

A Trip Down Memory Lane...

Recently my mind has been reflecting back a lot on my first years here in America.  We moved here when I was about 11 and oh my goodness, the stories I could tell!!!  Oh, alright... you twisted my arm...

The elementary school my little sister and I attended thought it was WONDERFUL to have two little British children move in to their boundaries.  In fact, they asked my mum, (American translation... MOM), to come in and talk at an assembly about British traditions, foods, etc.  I was so excited... I just knew that everyone was going to just love my mum and her adorable accent and that she was going to tell fabulous things about the country we came from...

The day of the assembly came, the gym was jam-packed and I was sitting there listening to every word that flowed out of her mouth... right up to the point where she was talking about traditional English foods and told the ENTIRE school that a favorite dessert in England was...

 "Spotted Dick"...

...trust me when I say that up to the day I graduated High School, I NEVER lived that down!!!

Spotted Dick:  A steamed or boiled suet pudding containing dried fruit, often served with custard.

I can honestly say, I do not in ALL my life EVER remember eating this, so I really can't be sure why my mum would tell all the kids at school about it... unless she just plain thought it would be funny!  :)

When You Need A Pick-Me-Up...

I admit, there are some days that I feel sorry for myself.  Don't we all?  Life can be hard!  But lately, on such occasions I go and read Nie Nie.  This woman inspires me not only to be a better person, but to see the grand scheme of things... to be grateful for what I have... to see the beautiful in everyone... to live every day with love in my heart.  If you have never read Nie Nie, you must, but not until you have spent a few minutes watching this video.  I guarantee you will not think of this as time wasted.  It is worth every minute! :)
