What The Heck Are Voles???

I am giving up gardening!  My garden is under attack!!!  It was bad enough that we had rocks go missing from around it... but now, we have voles.  Yup, I did not misspell that.  Is it just my East Coast City self that did not know what these things were?  They are like little field mice.

Ewwww!  Our next door neighbor very recently dug up their back yard and put in a basketball court.  We think that they must have disturbed them since they almost immediately after that showed up in our front garden patch.  They have eaten every marigold, all my hosta and the three baby bushes that I planted.  THERE IS NOTHING LEFT!!!!!  Dang things.  They have also made a complete mess of the yard pushing dirt out through all the remaining rocks.  I hear you can get some pellets to put down the holes... so I'm off to exterminate me some voles!

I know that owls like to eat them so just get yourself an owl. Good luck with your pest problem.

Yucky! Luckily, I've never actually seen one, just seen the holes they leave. I think we have pellets in our garage if you want to come grab some. Good luck!

How maddening! I'd be all for giving up (gardening is work and I'm lazy so of course I would). Hope you can get the problem dealt with soonly!

Hi just stopping by for a visit. Are the Voles like moles? Interesting, but I dont blame you in wanting them out of your yard. I hope you get it handled soon!

What a pest!!! We haven't had problems with voles, but we sure do have a gopher problem! One day, bean plants growing good beans, the next day, they are pulled right down through into the ground!!! Good luck exterminating!

Ugh those darn things! Max is pretty good at getting rid of them. We walked up one day to find him standing on his porch with a shovel...it was his version of Whack-a-mole!

Good Luck!

I think we have had one of those since moving in to our house- our cats made quick work of it. I don't think the voles would spend too much time in our yard before they were discovered by the cats. I hope you get them gone soon. Sorry about your yard- that is terrible!!! :)

So glad to see you at Friendly Friday! And yes, that B & B is a romantic place. It would be great for a honeymoon (I plan to do a post on weddings - they also have a chapel and place for reception), or a second honeymoon. The tower room has two floors with a winding staircase...yeah..it's awesome!

The only other time I heard of a vole besides now is when I dissected "owl pellets" with fourth graders. The pellet is whatever the owl can't digest and regurgitates and the kids would often find vole bones.
